Lenga Festival

Every year in December, the town of Tolhuin celebrates the Lenga Festival, considered one of the most important events in Tierra del Fuego. The lenga is a native tree that grows only in the south of Argentina and Chile and is one of the most demanded woods due to its durability and resistance. The artisans of the area carve their pieces from huge wooden logs of 2 meters long. The carvings are inspired by the history and culture of the native peoples of Tierra del Fuego, Shelk'nam ritual masks and figures of local animals, including guanacos and birds.

This town, located next to the imposing Lake Fagnano and the beautiful landscapes offered by the Heart of the Island, celebrates during 3 days the tradition of its forestry activity through a competition that includes sculptures in lenga wood, skills with axe and chainsaw, race with trunk on shoulder and soaped stick among others. There are also musical performances by local artists and nationally and internationally renowned guests, folkloric dances, craft fair and gastronomic products that mark the essence of the place, among which stands out the traditional Fuegian lamb "a la estaca", a delicacy of the gastronomy. This festival full of tradition and pride takes place in a familiar and magical atmosphere in this small corner of southern Argentina.
