Ushuaia: the end of the world
Located between the last section of the Andes mountain range and the Beagle Channel, Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world, capital of the province of Tierra del Fuego. Its name comes from the Yagán (Yámana language) and means “bay that faces westward”. The city was founded along with the creation of the Naval Subprefecture of Ushuaia on October 12, 1884.
From its beginnings as a military and prison post, Ushuaia has developed over the decades to become an international tourist destination. Its particular geography, dominated by mountains, valleys and lakes, offers visitors unforgettable landscapes and a wide variety of activities throughout the year.
Due to its latitude (54° South) Ushuaia has the particularity of having the longest night in winter (winter solstice) and the longest daylight hours in summer (summer solstice). Of the five cities in the world identified as Antarctica Gateways, Ushuaia is the closest port, only 1000 kilometers away from the Antarctic Peninsula.
