Visit the lakes

From the city of Ushuaia you can make day trips to visit two of the most popular natural attractions of the province, Lake Escondido and Lake Fagnano.

When

Lakes Escondido and Fagnano are two attractions that can be found along National Route 3.  Surrounded by a beautiful landscape of mountains and steep forests, they can be accessed by car or by hiring a tour with local agencies.
The tour starts from the city of Ushuaia. Taking National Route 3, you travel north for about 60 kilometers, towards the Garibaldi Pass. On the way you can see the iconic Mount Olivia, Mount Cinco Hermanos, the Carbajal Valley with its large peat bogs and the Tierra Mayor Valley, home of the winter resorts.  Once you arrive at Garibaldi Pass, you can go to the viewpoint, from where you can get a magnificent panoramic view of Lake Escondido . Photographs and selfies at this point are a must. Some operators offer a 4x4  tour along the old gravel road that descends to the lake shore. It is worth mentioning that this type of activity is subject to weather conditions.

Following the National Route for another 40 kilometers, you will find the beautiful Lake Fagnano. With an extension of 100 kilometers, this lake was called "Khami" by the Shelk'nam natives, a word that means "big water". Nearby is the town of Tolhuin, founded in 1972. The Fagnano lake has a singular feature: under its waters lies the Magellan Fault, the point where the South American and Scotia tectonic plates meet. Both Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica lie on these plates.

In the surroundings of the lake you can see old sawmills and beaver dams. Some tours make a brief stop at an estancia located in the area. After visiting these places, you will return to Ushuaia, with stopovers for lunch or snacks in one of the winter centers located in the Tierra Mayor Valley.
During winter it is advisable to check with the tour operators about the availability of these tours, due to weather conditions.
